Anam Cara CPE Educator Presents on Moral Injury in Healthcare

Fort Bliss, Texas — February 24, 2025 — Chaplain Garold Anderson, a Clinical Pastoral Education supervisory candidate with Anam Cara CPE, presented “Moral Injury and Health Care Workers” at William Beaumont Army Medical Center on February 21.

Anderson’s presentation explored the moral and spiritual dimensions of healthcare work, particularly the experiences that arise when clinicians encounter situations that conflict with deeply held values, professional responsibilities, or their own sense of what is right. His work brings the language of moral injury into conversation with spiritual care, trauma-informed practice, and the realities of working within complex healthcare systems.

Anderson serves as an active-duty U.S. Army chaplain in military healthcare and is completing his formation as a CPE Supervisor-Educator with Anam Cara CPE. His clinical experience includes spiritual care in surgical, medical, and inpatient behavioral health settings.

He holds both a Doctor of Ministry in Chaplaincy and a PhD in Organizational Leadership, with research interests that include institutional culture, leadership, retention, moral injury, and spiritual formation. He is also pursuing graduate study in Marriage and Family Therapy, further integrating systems theory and behavioral health perspectives into his work as a chaplain and educator.

As Anderson approaches retirement from the U.S. Army, his work in CPE supervision and doctoral education represents a continuation of a vocation shaped by military service, clinical spiritual care, leadership, and the formation of those who care for others.
